Biography
Georges Spiro was a Swiss painter born in Warsaw in 1909. He grew up in Vienna. In 1942, he crossed into France with his family and settled in Nice, part of the unoccupied part of France. At the end of World War II, he was enlisted in the French army. His wife was murdered in a Nazi concentration camp, his brother made his way to England. After the war, Spiro went to London to find his brother. There he exhibited his works at L'Arcade Gallery. In 1948, he returned to France and exhibited his work for the first time in Paris at an exhibition of young artists. He was recognized, and was awarded a prize. His paintings are in the convention of surrealism. They were exhibited in many painting salons and were included in the collections of numerous museums and private collections. Georges Spiro's works have been auctioned many times. The artist died in 1994 in Nice.
