WARSZAWSKI Józef - Mickiewicz a pupil of Sarbiewski. Rome 1964. typis Pontificiae Universitatis Gregorianae. 4, pp. 527, [1], f. 1 + f. 1 loose [errata]. broch., wraps.
Wrappers slightly edgeworn, good condition. Author's handwritten dedication to Jerzy Vetulani (neurobiologist). On the wing of the wrapper the publisher writes: "An excellent writer [...] has managed to solve a question on which the world of Polish literary critics has toiled in vain for the past hundred years [...]. On the basis of a long search and strenuous studies [...] he managed to establish the correct source from which Mickiewicz drew the spirit of his poetry and the principles of his epic work. No previous work of discovery can compare with this work, which paves the way for the study of Mickiewicz for the next hundred years [...]. This work will have to find itself in the hand of every Mickiewiczologist, every historian of Polish literature, among the textbooks of every university, in every major library." Despite such an enthusiastic appraisal, the book failed to gain recognition among scholars. Julian Krzyżanowski denied it any scientific merit, and considered Fr. Warszawski a graphomaniac.
