Franciszek ŻMURKO
1859 Lviv - 1910 Warsaw
He began his studies in drawing and painting in Lviv, and then studied under Jan Matejko at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow, as well as in Vienna, Rome, and from 1876 to 1880 at the Munich Academy, including under Alexander Wagner. A decorated participant in many exhibitions (including a gold medal for his painting Cleopatra; 1879), he enjoyed critical acclaim and success with the public. He was a member of the Munich Kunstverein. He painted primarily in the academic convention, compositions with ancient, historical, oriental or symbolic themes, in which the anecdotal layer provided an opportunity to depict female nudes. He was also a portraitist, the author of numerous, very popular "headpieces" and nudes.
In the offered work, he was inspired by Wilhelm Kotarbinski's 1881 painting "Venetian Serenade."
