Black Diamonds is a project referring to the great ideas of
modernism, this time told from the end - from the side of the accompanying
their social consequences. Its main element was the transformation of coal
stone into small sculptures, created in the manner of jewelers' diamonds.
The black sculptures were made by unemployed former miners, this time
this time employed as part of an art project. The Black Diamonds project
is not only a dialogue with the post-industrial tradition of Upper Silesia, but also an
also an attempt to answer the question about the causal power of art and the artist in
initiating social activity.

ŁUKASZ SUROWIEC is an interdisciplinary artist: sculptor, performer, filmmaker
videos and author of social actions. He graduated from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow,
also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań and the Universität der Künste in Berlin. W
his objects and artistic interventions, Surowiec penetrates and explores current social relations,
he also addresses historical and political issues. The artist rejects classical categories or
classifications in favor of intermedial works that explore the human condition in contemporary
socioeconomic conditions. In his works, he tries to draw attention to
marginalized social groups and their problems, including the historical past,
seemingly buried already in the past. In his works, he also explores issues related to
memory. His work takes the form of a method to explore public
reality, with attention to marginalized individuals. In his
art he addresses current social issues, also going beyond the walls of official
art institutions. He is a recipient of a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and a winner of the
of the prestigious Spojrzenia (2017) competition for young artists. Major exhibitions include:
7th Berlin Biennale (2012), Dziady, Bunkier Sztuki (2013), What can be seen - Polish art today, MSN,
Warsaw (2014), Entrance to the port, Emigration Museum, Gdynia (2016), Late Polishness, CCA Zamek
Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2017).
