Władysław Hasior (1928-1999) - sculptor, painter, stage designer and educator associated with Zakopane. He belonged to the group of the most outstanding and unconventional contemporary artists. He considered artistic activity an intellectual provocation. For artists of the 60s and 70s generation, he became almost an iconic figure. He was a sculptor, although many of his works are difficult to classify in explicitly sculptural terms. He became known as a total artist, working at the intersection of art genres: painting, sculpture, architecture, handicrafts. In 1958, he abandoned classical sculpture, creating objects using the montage technique - three-dimensional compositions made up of various objects and finished works.
Hasior worked on his famous banners since 1965, drawing inspiration from church processional banners, military banners, tapestries and family crests while measuring himself against national mythology. In them he revealed his sense of humor, his propensity for the grotesque and mockery. The banners feature images of ancient and modern idols, as well as witty conterfects of characters typical of our social life. As the artist himself admitted, his initial intention was to make a mockery of the pompousness and festivity of the banners, to emphasize the gap between what is inscribed on them and reality, but ultimately their beauty prevailed.
