Biography
Studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts (1951-56) with H. Tomaszewski and W. Fangor, among others. Since 1964 he lived in France and since 1969 in the USA. His rich oeuvre includes easel and wall paintings, printmaking and applied graphics, exhibitions, spatial planning, sculpture and photography. He is the author of the plafond of the theater room of the House of Culture in Oswiecim (1958-61) and the plastic composition in front of the Museum of Modern Art in Houston (1975). His paintings include abstract and representational works. In many of his paintings we see small human figures or only their very symbolic shapes, as if suspended in a space that is difficult to define. In others, the "black hole" motif appears, playing an important role in the artist's work. He participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the Exhibition of Young Visual Arts in Warsaw (1956), the Exhibition of Painting at the National Museum in Warsaw (1961), the Second Biennale Azuréene in Cannes (1967), Gallery Arte in Denver (1988), an exhibition of works by Polish artists working abroad entitled "We are" at the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw (1991). He has had many solo exhibitions, including retrospective exhibitions at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles (1973) and the Royal Baths in Warsaw (2004) and Sotheby's in Amsterdam (2007).
