Toyohara CHIKANOBU [1838-1912] Japanese woodcut artist, author of works on a variety of subjects. In addition to battle and historical scenes, his work is dominated by female portraits in the style of the so-called Bijing, of which he was one of the most prominent representatives. His works provide documentation of the style and clothing of 19th-century Japanese women. Most of Toyohara's works were in the form of triptychs. The artist signed his works as Chikanobu Yoshu.
