Stanisław JAKUBOWSKI 1885 -1964 Polish painter and graphic artist. Studied at the School of Wood Industry in Stanislawow (1903-1906) and later at the Cracow Academy (1907-1912). He worked as a teacher of drawings in middle schools, and after the war, from 1958, he taught copperplate engraving, conservation of engravings, manuscripts, prints and enameling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He took an active part in artistic life, was a member of many groups (including president of the Graphic Artists' Circle), exhibited extensively at home and abroad. At first he was engaged in woodcarving, then in painting, and from 1914 he devoted himself to graphic arts. The subject matter and style of Jakubowski's works were shaped by his interest in Slavic art and the history of ornament. His work was also influenced by the art of Young Poland. Jakubowski is the author of about a thousand engravings and more than a hundred ex-librises. He published three portfolios of prints: Tekę Praslavian Architectural Motifs (1923), Land of Slavic Fairy Tales (1929) and - Gods of the Slavs (had two editions: 1919 and 1933).
