The slaughter of Kraziouse was triggered by the repressive religious policy of the Tsar in the late 19th century. After the expulsion of the Benedictine Order, the Russian authorities planned to convert the church belonging to it in the town of Krozh in Samogitia into an Orthodox church. Protests by local Catholics were pacified by Cossacks on November 22, 1893, resulting in the deaths of nine people.
