Tadeusz Popiel- a disciple and admirer of Jan Matejko- was educated at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow, then studied in Vienna under Hans Makart and at the Academy in Munich under Karl Piloty and Alexander Wagner. He traveled extensively in Europe; at home he stayed mainly in Krakow and Lviv. In 1897 he lived in Chernivtsi, from where he made trips to Romania. He was active in many fields; in addition to easel painting, he was involved in mural painting and traveled to St. Petersburg and Moscow in connection with commissions, and in 1899 won a competition for the painting decoration of the chapel of St. Stanislaus at Padua Cathedral. He participated in exhibitions both at home and abroad, and his paintings were awarded medals several times, including a gold medal in 1893 for his painting After the Storm at the World Exhibition in San Francisco. He painted primarily religious and historical paintings, but at the same time also genre scenes, portraits and landscapes. He collaborated with Wojciech Kossak and Jan Styka on "Panorama Raclawicka" and with Styka on "Golgotha" and "Bem in Transylvania" panoramas.
