Tadeusz Popiel (1863 - 1913) is a Krakow-bound artist, a student of Jan Matejko at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. In his artistic output, in addition to portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, he has many historical compositions, in which he is faithful to the experience acquired from his master. Awarded at many exhibitions and expositions at home and abroad, he was a prolific author not only of easel paintings, but also co-author of popular painting panoramas and many decorations of both public buildings (including a theater in Lviv) and church interiors, murals, frescoes and stained glass. The entry of John III Sobieski into Lviv was the subject of a large mural painting in the Church of the Poor Clares in Lviv (next to the vows of Jan Kazimierz), created during the renovation of the church in 1898. The presented work directly refers to this composition. The provenance of the work is also Lvivian. It was owned by a prominent Lviv professor, founder of the first veterinary college and university with Polish language in the then Russian partition, Dr. Pawel Kretowicz, lecturer at the Veterinary Academy in 1882 - church in 1898.
