Kazimierz STABROWSKI

1869 Kruplany - 1929 Garwolin

Painter, draughtsman and pedagogue. From 1887 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. His student works were awarded medals of the Academy several times. In 1893 he traveled to Palestine in connection with the painting of his graduation picture Mahomet in the desert, for which he received a grand gold medal. After graduation, he remained in St. Petersburg and studied with I. J. Riepin. In 1897 he went to Paris and continued his education at the Académie Julian under B. Constans and J. P. Laurens. A year later, he returned to St. Petersburg. At the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, he was awarded the Grand Silver Medal for his painting Silence in the Countryside. He participated in many international exhibitions, including those in Munich, Vienna, Paris and Venice. He also had solo exhibitions in Warsaw, Poznan, Lodz and St. Petersburg. Since 1902 he was a member of the Society of Polish Artists Art. In 1903 he settled in Warsaw, and spent the summer months at the Dłużniewo estate in Latvia. He was one of the initiators of the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, established in 1904, and was its first director. He traveled a great deal: in 1909-13 he was in France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Spain and the Canary Islands. After World War I, which he spent in St. Petersburg, he traveled to Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Bosnia, Sweden and Norway. The fruit of these trips was a myriad of landscapes, which he painted in both oil and pastel. In his earlier period, he painted fantasy-symbolic compositions and decorative portraits, which reflected the influence of Russian symbolist M. Vrubel. Stabrovsky's late work oscillated between mystical themes and mimetic reproduction of nature. Landscapes became the dominant theme; landscape motifs were provided by the artist's numerous travels in Poland and abroad.
