January SUCHODOLSKI

1797 Grodno - 1875 Bojmie

Initially engaged in amateur painting. He spent the years 1832-1837 in Rome. In 1939 he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He remained under the strong influence of his teacher H. Vernet. He became popular as a painter of historical-battle paintings, and also painted genre scenes, horse portraits and images of horses, as well as scenes from the life of the Italian people and seascapes.

His stay in Italy and studies at the French Academy run by Horace Vernet brought, among other things, romantic landscapes idealizing nature to his work. Picturesque, views of the sea coast illuminated by the rays of the setting sun. Frequent in them is the motif of ruins so fashionable during the Romantic period. Also characteristic is the smooth finish typical of his teacher Vernet.
