Biography
He spent the years 1832 - 1837 studying painting in Rome, where he studied at the French Academy under Horace Vernet. In 1839 he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He was heavily influenced by the work of his teacher, Vernet. He won public acclaim as a painter of historical and battle paintings, and also painted genre scenes, horse portraits and images of horses, as well as scenes from the life of the Italian people and seascapes.
