Jan Rosen (1854 - 1936), a popular painter-battleman, took his first drawing lessons as a child - with Henryk Redlich in Dresden and Franciszek Kostrzewski in Warsaw. Later, between 1872 and 1874, he studied in Munich - at the Academy under Alexander Strähuber and sculptor Ferdinand Barth and in the private studio of Jozef Brandt, and between 1875 and 1879 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Isidor Pils and Jean-Léon Gerome. He was out of the country for a long time and traveled extensively; he lived in Munich, Paris and Lausanne. In 1891 he became court painter of the St. Petersburg court. He returned to the country in 1921; initially he lived in the countryside, later in Warsaw and Lviv. He also traveled to Italy. He mainly painted military paintings, battle scenes from the Napoleonic era and the November Uprising, as well as genre paintings with his favorite motif of horsemen and horses.
