Lot description Show orginal version
lithograph, paper, 11 x 14 cm (clear passe-partout), 22 x 24 cm (passe-partout); signed on matrix p. d.: J. Rosen.
The work was made by Rosen especially for a portfolio published by the Artistic and Literary Circle in Cracow in 1881, the purpose of which was to raise funds for the reconstruction of the Croatian capital Zagreb, affected by the earthquake a year earlier. The lithograph was made in 1881 at Aureliusz Pruszyński's Artistic Lithography Department in Cracow.

Jan Rosen took drawing lessons as a child - in Dresden with H Redlich and in Warsaw with F Kostrzewski. He then studied in Munich - at the Academy and at J. Brandt's private studio - as well as in Paris with I. Pils and J. L. Gerome. He traveled extensively in Europe and lived in Munich, Paris and Lausanne. He painted mainly military paintings, battle scenes from the Napoleonic era and the November Uprising, as well as genre paintings with his favorite motif of horsemen and horses.

In the factory of A. Pruszyński, from the end of the 19th century, leading artists of Cracow reflected their graphic works in lithography (including posters), including the famous "Teka Melpomena"
