He began his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 1899, where he studied under Józef Unierzyński and Leon Wyczółkowski. He made his debut in the artistic arena as a caricaturist in the magazines "Chochoł" and "Liberum Veto." In 1905, he completed his education at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was a member of the Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka", the Vienna grouping Hagenbund, the Poznan "Dawn" and the Parisian Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Since 1925, he took over the chair of painting at the Cracow Academy. Pautsch's work represented the folk-expressionist trend in the art of Young Poland, and the artist is known primarily as a bard of the Hutsul and Podhale cultures.
