One of the most famous Czech painters of the 19th century, a landscape painter. He studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Art in Munich, and later at the Vienna Academy of Art. Between 1873 and 1878 he was called up as a reservist during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. When he went to Paris, he studied the masters of the Barbizon School. In 1882 he returned to Bohemia. He painted atmospheric landscapes from nature.
