Wawrzyniec Brzozowski, the artist's son, recalled: After 1984, his father, devoting his time almost entirely to overseeing the resulting tapestries - stopped painting altogether. In practice, until the end of his life, he only drew, and if he painted, only tiny boards. The reason for this, among other things, was the artist's deteriorating health. According to Wawrzyniec Brzozowski: The second reason - who knows if it wasn't the most important one - was simply the problems with the supply of paints (not to mention canvas), which always had to be of the best quality, and in the 1980s in Poland, difficulties in obtaining art materials of good quality were common.
(quoted in Notes to a Biography, [in] Tadeusz Brzozowski. 1918-1987, edited by Anna Żakiewicz, National Museum, Warsaw, 1997, pp. 176, 191)
The painting on display at our auction, therefore, is one of Brzozowski's few paintings created in the 1980s.
