Tsar Nicholas I is depicted in a general's uniform with the ribbon of the Order of
St. Andrew's in blue and numerous decorations. The standing collar
in red, embroidered in gold leaves with ornament. Gold epaulets,
characteristic general cuffs in trident.
The work is a copy of a portrait of the Czar made in 1835 by Franz Krüger.
This artist studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, of which, in later
years, he was a professor. He portrayed members of the Prussian ruling family
and representatives of princely families. In 1835, he painted a portrait commissioned by the Russian court

in Tsarskoye Selo. The artist obtained permission to make replicas of the portrait,
which was also copied by other artists. One such copy is the portrait
presented at the auction. Another is in the collection of the National Museum
Warsaw.
