The Polish Legions were formed by people of various ages, religions, social strata and nationalities; they were united by their belief in independence, later upheld until 1989. The Polish Legions were the first Polish military formation in the 20th century. It brought together Jozef Pilsudski's Rifleman units, Rifleman Squads, Field Falcon Squads and other paramilitary organizations active before World War I, mainly in the Austrian partition. With their armed efforts during the war, they contributed to the restoration of independence in 1918. Through the Legions passed 35-40 thousand soldiers. About 3 thousand fell, 1358 soldiers of the Legions received the Order of Virtuti Militari.
