Containing reproductions of more than 500 postcards with historical commentaries, the album is a unique panorama of World War I from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 to the signing of the armistice at Compiegne near Paris on November 11, 1918. It devotes most space to the military actions on the eastern front (battles in Galicia, the Kingdom of Poland and East Prussia) and the armed deeds undertaken for the restoration of an independent Polish state. Special attention was paid to historical moments close to the heart of every Pole, such as the expedition of Jozef Pilsudski's First Cadre Company to the Russian partition, the battles of the legionaries in the Carpathian Mountains, the charge of the uhlans at Rokitna, etc. Also shown is the war effort of the neighboring nations of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Legion and the Czech Legion. In addition, Christmas and commemorative postcards of the time, salvaged in a few pieces, are recalled, and the propaganda efforts of the parties involved in the conflict to mobilize Europeans to persevere in the tragic spectacle of the Great War are illustrated with the finest examples.
An excellent guide for postcard collectors, with detailed descriptions of which postcards were issued for particular occasions, such as battles won, propaganda efforts introducing specific profiles of military commanders, and so on.
