Alfred "Al" Alvarez - English poet, writer and critic of Jewish descent, best known for The Savage God, a meditation on literary suicide. If the title of his 1999 autobiography, Where Did It All Go Right? - the word that best sums up the life of writer, poet and critic Al Alvarez is "luck." However, there is a more appropriate four-letter word to describe the life he has chosen: "risk." Not for him a game of percentages. Alvarez, who died at the age of 90 from viral pneumonia, faced risks in his favorite pastimes - rock climbing and poker - and in his academic career without a permanent position .
