A uniquely illustrated edition of a journey through Russia. Theauthor of the illustrations , Henri Lanos (1859-1929), was a watercolorist, painter and printmaker, one of the most prominent of his era in France. The journey is devoted primarily to St. Petersburg and Moscow. Separate chapters deal with areas and countries conquered by the Russian Empire. One is devoted to Finland, another toUkraine, and the penultimate toPoland. There are illustrations of, among others, a market in Warsaw, a coachman, tsarist soldiers and a portrait of a Warsaw Jew. In discussing the Jewish quarter in Warsaw, the author uses the term "New Jerusalem" [sic!] to refer to this part of the city.
