Judyta Sobel (Lviv 1924 - New York 2012) studied from 1947 to 1950 at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Lodz. She was a student of Władysław Strzemiński. At the turn of 1948/49 she participated in the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Cracow. At the end of her studies, she was briefly an assistant to Stefan Wegner (who was dismissed in the spring of 1950). Soon after, she left for Israel and then to the United States, where she settled in New York. In 1998/99 and 2000, her works from private collections were exhibited at Starmach Gallery exhibitions in Krakow: "I Exhibition of Modern Art - Fifty Years Later" and "Moderns and Socialist Realism" and reproduced in accompanying catalogs. They represent figurative painting, but at the same time in the type of deformation and the way paint is laid down they are radically expressionist, close to abstraction.
