ink, gouache, paper, dimensions 7 x 14 cm, signed l. d. "Daniel Chodowiecki"
Daniel Chodowiecki (1726 - 1801) was a draughtsman, painter, illustrator and printmaker, born in Gdansk and died in Berlin as director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts there. The author of more than 3,000 drawings and engravings that are a capital illustration of his contemporary times, unabashedly humorous and sometimes even caricatured. He is also a painter and illustrator, author of historical scenes from the history of the Seven Years' War, among others.
The presented miniature multi-character, narrative scene probably shows a merchant woman pointing a wealthy man - a customer - the way to an ajar door, towards which a young woman (tondo) is walking. At the bottom, a figure inside is searching through open drawers and trunks. Above both scenes, in a cloud, the figure of a cupid with a pen, presumably writing down these evil transgressions.
