HOZJUSZ Stanislas (1504-1579), bust; taken from: Thevet, André, La Cosmographie Vniverselle, Paris 1575; copper b.b.; st. bdb, light yellowing of margins, top edge tear; dimensions of portrait: 119x143 mm, dimensions of sheet: ca. 220x365mm; title on right p.: Pourtraitt d'Hosiuss Polonnois; [Catalogue of portraits... does not note] .

Stanislaw Hosius was royal secretary to Sigismund I the Old, great secretary to the crown, bishop of Chelm and Warmia, and cardinal. He composed the Confessio fidei catholicae Christiana (Confessionof Catholic Faith) and persuaded the Polish bishops to swear it in during the Piotrków synod in 1551. A well-known opponent of the Reformation. He opposed the translation of the Bible into Polish and the idea of introducing liturgy in the national language.
