From there he went to Egypt as a missionary, where he stayed intermittently for missions in Syria from 1791 to 1810. From 1802 to 1808 he was apostolic prefect of Upper Egypt. Some sources also state that he was prior of a monastery in Cairo in 1798. During his stay in Egypt, he worked as a chaplain and interpreter for Napoleonic troops, among other things.
