Lot description Show orginal version

Naval Station Guantanamo Bay - a U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, in Cuban territory leased by the United States. It lies not far south of the Cuban city of Guantánamo. It occupies an area with a total area of 117.6 square kilometers, on both sides of the entrance to the bay.

As a result of the U.S.-Spanish War, Cuba ceased to be a Spanish colony, but fell within the U.S. sphere of influence, resulting in the so-called Platt Amendment (which remained in effect until 1934), which ensured U.S. control over Cuban government policy. The land on which the base is located has been leased since 1903. The lease was renewed in 1934 for an indefinite period, with a clause that it could be terminated only by mutual consent. After the Cuban Revolution, relations between the two countries deteriorated.

Cuban authorities consider the Guantanamo base an occupied territory and the agreement with the United States illegal. The lease was imposed under threat of force, which, according to them, is a violation of international law. Some legal analyses support these claims. Cuban authorities have repeatedly called on the Americans to return the Guantanamo territory.

Arguments have also been raised about violations of the provisions of the agreement itself, which did not include commercial operations or incarceration on the base.
