[MIDOWICZS, family chronicle]. Manuscript "Chronicle of the Midowicz Family, British Branch" probably written in the 1950s, with later additions until the mid-1970s.
Notebook form. 17.5x14.8 cm, pp. 120 (including 87 blank), cloth binding, gilt trim. On the front pastedown photos of four members of the family: "Adam (1844-1913) - lord of Będzieszyn [...]", "Tadeusz (1872-1956) - inspector of the Polish State Railways [...]", "Wladyslaw (1907- ) - master of philosophy of the U.J., lieutenant of the Polish Army [...]", Jacek (1933- ) - mechanical engineer [...]". On the first sheet information that the chronicle was started by Wladyslaw and continued by Jacek. On the back was pasted a coat of arms cut from an unknown publication and a dried edelweiss. The earliest news about the family dates back to 1683, another only to the end of the 18th century. - These are presented in a short introductory text. More space is taken up by the chapter "Wladyslaw," in which he describes his fate from his childhood in Mikuliczyn in the Hutsul region, the years of the First War spent in Stanislawow, his school education in Dziedzice, his studies in Cracow and Lvov, his interests in mountain tourism (m.including staking trails in the Beskids, running a shelter on Babia Góra, and later a meteorological station on the summit of Popa Ivan in Czarnohor), his stay in Warsaw, his evacuation through Hungary after the outbreak of World War II, and his life in exile in Scotland, Singapore and Australia. He concludes his story about himself with a note containing an old prayer once read to a dying man. The next chapter is dedicated to Jack, Wladislaw's son. It contains a description of his childhood years spent, among other things, in mountain huts, until he crossed the border in September 1939, at the age of 6. A later note (in Jack's hand?) informs about the boy's wartime fate and his journey to Great Britain. The final pages contain Wladyslaw's text "To my descenders", a family tree of the family made by him and two biographies: Jack's and Wladyslaw's, in the case of the latter giving details of his whereabouts from 1907 to 1973. Attached is a photo of two soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. Very good condition.
W. Midowicz (1907-1993) - geographer, meteorologist, tourist activist, mountain tourist. "Parallel to his studies and scientific work, he was active in the Polish Tatra Society. Among other things, in 1925-1926 he marked all Polish tourist trails in the Babia Gora region, including one of the few high-mountain sections in the Beskids - the so-called Perć Akademików to Diablak. In the Babia Gora region he was known for the so-called 'brush war', in which he fought against the signs of the German tourist organization Beskidenverein" (Wikipedia).
