Grade: XF-
Collection: The Grain Collection

The engraver of the dies for this ducat created them under the supervision of his later successor, Frederick van Vloock. Large, careless letters carved in the die (especially A, R) and the knight’s feet are clearly visible. Punctuation error – an extra dot in PROVIN on the reverse. A double strike with a shift, visible in the legend of the reverse and in the number 0 in the date on the obverse.

The preparation stage of the dies for minting ducats in Utrecht left much to be desired already in the 1620s. The most clumsy were the dies prepared by Frederick van Vloock. Only the development of refreshed images of both sides of the ducat by Roelof van Cuylenburgh in 1647 brought a clear improvement in the visual attractiveness of the Utrecht ducats. A great example of a ducat from a short period of minting with imperfect Van Vloock dies. A legible specimen documenting this interesting period of ducat issues in the Netherlands.
