Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: NGC AU
Certificate: NGC 6636573-009
Collection: The Grain Collection

Early issue, only the second year ducats of the Netherlands type were minted in Friesland. Ducats from this mint are sought after by collectors and are rarely offered in trade, especially in such a state of preservation.

Coin minted under mintmaster Lodewijk Alewijn; brother of the mintmaster of the Gederland mint at this time – Jacob. In September 1586, his stepson and later independent mintmaster of the Friesland mint in the years 1590–1616, 19–year–old Willem van Vierssen, was employed to work next to Lodewijk. The presented ducat was thus minted in the presence of two Frisian mintmasters – the current (Lodewijk Alewijn) and the future (Willem van Vierssen).

About mint condition. large, round planchet with mint gloss. Slightly bent. Fully legible legends, mintmark and details of the knight.
