An impressive issue commemorating the coronation of Augustus II the Strong as king of the Republic.
Two-ducat 1697, the highest denomination among the coronation issues of August II. Struck in Dresden, stamped most likely by Martin H. Omeis. With a beautiful image of the king, who swore to reign and defend the Republic in Wawel Cathedral on September 15 (as the sentence in the rim tells us).
Obverse: a rider on horseback, in ancient attire.
Reverse: sword and scepter passing through the crown. In the rim REGET ET DEFENDET (he shall reign and defend), in the lines: D[ei] G[ratia] AUGUSTUS II CORON[atus] IN REG[em] POLON[iae] ET M[agnum] D[ucem] L[ithuaniae] D[ie] 15 SEPT[embris] A[nno] 1697 (By God's grace Augustus II crowned King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania on September 15, 1697.).
