Leopold Tyrmand, the forerunner of jazz in Poland, answers the question: what is jazz! This book is not in the nature or form of a textbook, lexicon or any vade mecum on jazz matters. It has the character of an essay filled with considerations, containing a little information and a lot of completely personal impressions. It is a slant on the problem. The issue spills over widely, covers a vast area, washes over various areas of contemporary culture, and is inextricably linked with everyday life - just as custom and art intermingle in modern times with a difficult and sociologically little studied phenomenon, and called everyday entertainment life.
