Based on his own memoirs, this is a short story written by Tytus Chalubinsky in 1879 (written since 1878). It constitutes Chałubiński's only published literary work and probably the only one he wrote (among some thirty items in his bibliography). Chałubiński initially planned to publish the work exclusively in the Pamiętnik Towarzystwa Tatrzańskiego (Diary of the Tatra Society), but - on the advice of Mstislav Godlewski - decided to publish it first in the moderately positivist journal Niwa.
