Tyniec a former village near Krakow, which was incorporated into Krakow on January 1, 1973. It is located in the western part of the city, on the right bank of the Vistula River in District VIII Debniki. Tyniec is best known for its Benedictine monastery, in existence since 1044, one of the richest and most important in Poland.
Tyniec is located about 12 kilometers southwest of Krakow's city center, on the right bank of the Vistula River, between the limestone Jurassic hills known as the Tyniec Hills. "This is Tyniec, that stronghold and monastery that we have been hearing about ever since the Ills extended the borders of their state into the domains of Chrobacya, one of the first foci of education and Christian faith in Poland, a stronghold around which momentous battles in the history of the country were fought at times, and from which the Bar Confederates still made a famous excursion to capture the castle of Krakow. A historical place, evoking distant, glorious memories, and in its very location full of romantic charm and allure." -fragment from the book.
