Stefan Żeromski (1864-1925) was a Polish novelist, playwright and publicist. He was born in Strawczyn in the Kielce region. He also wrote under pseudonyms: Stefan Iksmoreż, Józef Katerla and Maurycy Zych. He was president of the Polish PEN Club and was called, not coincidentally, "the conscience of the nation," due to the social commitment of his works. Żeromski was one of the most outstanding Polish writers in history.
