SKŁADKOWSKI Slawoj

NOT THE LAST WORD OF THE ACCUSED

Memoirs and articles

London, 1964, B. Świderski, p. 559, format 14x22 cm

"None of the people who ruled pre-Soviet Poland experienced the bitterness of defeat, defeat to the same degree as Składkowski. A hail of accusations fell on Składkowski's head: from treason and cowardice to the stigmatization of him as an executioner of his compatriots and gravedigger of the homeland. Składkowski bravely faced the scorn, withstood the storm against him, did not break down. Endowed with a talent for writing, he sought oblivion in his pen. He reached back to his serene childhood, his clouded youth, to the Legions, to his adored Commander, to the times when he served his homeland - according to his conviction - to the best of his ability in various high state positions. And in these memories he found reassurance and... fame as a great columnist, the best storyteller. His Administrative Flowers won him a place on Parnassus.

But the bitterness with which he had been sipped before left a bitter taste and did not let him forget the mud with which he had been mixed! Having gained a position for himself as a well-known writer, he prepared a new book in the last years before his death, titled. "Not the last word of the accused."

It is an attempt to show the subjective truth of the conscience of a man to whom history assigned a thankless role at a moment of historical catastrophe. Składkowski armed with "purity of intention and honesty of execution" believed that the last word, objective, would be spoken by history.

"Not the last word of the accused" contains 35 articles, covering the state activity of Felicjan Slawoj Składkowski, from the first moments of the reborn Poland until the September catastrophe of 1939 and the events directly related to it The book shows the Author as an unparalleled polemicist, a great swordsman of the word, who knew how to defend himself, but was also able to attack at the right moment, dealing severe blows to his opponents."
