Monographic collection of Polish folk ballads and dances. The volume was compiled at a time when Kolberg was preparing a serial publication devoted exclusively to songs and music. He later decided to treat it as the first volume of the People. Thus, the book opens a multi-volume series of Kolberg's regional and issue-based monographs. The first part contains the texts and melodies of 41 ballad themes, most of which are given in numerous variants from different regions of Poland (a total of 444 ballads). The second part collects 466 dance melodies with chants. A short introduction by Kolberg includes a discussion of the publishing principles he adopted and general remarks about folk music. The photo-offset reissue was preceded by three introductions by contemporary publishers: the first, by J. Gajek, reports on the work undertaken by the Polish Folklore Society to edit and reedit Kolberg's Complete Works; the second, by J. Krzyzanowski, discusses Kolberg's achievements in editing folk literature; the third, by M. Sobieski, is devoted to Kolberg as a composer and musical folklorist. The introductory section also includes a sketch map of the territorial ranges of Kolberg's various ethnographic monographs. The material part is enriched by 10 color illustrations of folk costumes, made by Antoni Kolberg and Karol Marconi.
