Herbert had many friends and often exchanged letters with them, in which he did not hide his feelings. Even relations with his masters turned into friendship after a while. Herbert prefaces his signature in letters to the philosopher Elzenberg with the terms: "disciple", "wayward disciple", "sincerely devoted disciple", "loving disciple", "faithful disciple", "blunt disciple". To a friendly couple from England, Magdalena and Zbigniew Czajkowski, he addresses in letters: "Dear Animals", and signs, for example: "attached animal", "animal old but faithful". Sometimes next to the signature he attaches a drawing of a pet. Herbert also refers to friends in his letters by other humorous nicknames, such as "Scarab", "Cat", "Poohs". He signs his name as Zbigniew, Zbyszek, but also "retired Dionysus," "Pooh," (married) "tinker," "Monster of Loch Warsaw," and at the end of his life "Commander of the Royal Independent Death Hussar Brigade - Colonel Zbigniew Herbert
