For Whom the Bell Tolls - a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940 in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons publishing house.
Next to the short story The Old Man and the Sea, it is considered the author's most important work. It tells the story of a guerrilla unit fighting on the side of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It is a psychological study of a man witnessing the horrors of war.
