E.XX, 284-285 First edition of the Polish translation. One of the most outstanding historical works in the oeuvre of Marcin Kromer (1512-1589) - bishop of Warmia, diplomat, writer and historian, secretary to Prince Sigismund Augustus, who, upon his accession to the throne, showered Kromer with honors and entrusted him with the function of deputy in the most important diplomatic matters. Kromer was an advocate of Polish affairs at the Sejm of the Reich and the Council of Trent. The work, written in Latin and based, among other things, on previously arranged materials from the Crown Treasury Archive at Wawel, was first published in 1555.The purpose of the work was to present a picture of the entirety of Polish history to readers at home and abroad. Kromer's work is of great historical value, with more than 100 documents quoted in extenso in the text, and the oldest Polish chronicle by Gall Anonymus was also used. Although the work was initially received with hostility in the country, over time this opinion changed and in 1580 the Sejm passed a public acknowledgment of Kromer. Late Renaissance binding: brown leather, knurl embossing on the facings with personifications of virtues, traces of buckles, edges of k. colors. Piece with hand rubrications (underlining, initials, marginalia, stamps). K. tit. - later print on old paper, eight k. nlb. Index from the end in a neat copy on old paper. Soiling and discoloration in places, otherwise very good condition. Rare.
