Vitruvius
ON ARCHITECTURE BOOKS TEN
The work of Vitruvius - the only surviving ancient treatise on architecture in its entirety - is an invaluable source of knowledge for us about all types of buildings erected by the Greeks and Romans. Most of what we know about ancient architecture - architectural orders, proportions, design principles - we know precisely from Vitruvius. In modern times, for several centuries, starting with the Renaissance, it was the basic textbook of every architect. Today it remains of interest not only to lovers of art history, for the author's deductions go far beyond the main theme - covering such fields as mechanics, philosophy and astronomy. The lucid lecture is also embellished by numerous anecdotes, such as the one about Archimedes jumping out of a bathtub.
