Author's first published treatise (original edition in 1687) on the education of young girls. François Fénelon (b. 1651, d. 1715), French theologian, poet and writer, friend of Cardinal Bossuet, one of the most prominent Catholic speakers of France at the time, Archbishop of Cambrai, in his reflections presented general principles of education, but also its specificity to girls. He shows the advantages and disadvantages of girls and the differences with the education of boys. The famous treatise, which has been reprinted many times, is supplemented at the end with a letter to a lady regarding the education of her daughter, an only child.
Period binding, full leather in medium condition with minimal rubbing, especially at edges; spine embossed and gilt with title and beautiful floral and geometric designs, but with loss at bottom; interior in db condition, unblemished, occasionally stains but dry; overall db condition.
