Ivan Paskevitch was the commander of the Russian army that suppressed the November Uprising. In recognition of his merits, the tsar granted him the title of Prince of Warsaw and appointed him governor in the Kingdom of Poland. The period of his rule is referred to as Paskevich's night. In 1849, Paskevich commanded a Russian corps supporting Austria against insurgents in Hungary. During the Crimean War, he commanded the Danube Army.
