Ceremonial shield of King Henry II - France circa 1870.
Made of copper in 1:1 scale, beautifully repoussed, modeled after the original 15th century shield of King Henry.
The original shield created for Henry II was created in the 15th century and depicted the bloody scene of the legendary Battle of Cannae fought between the armies of Rome and Carthage. The real shield made of steel, gold and silver is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Very good condition. As seen in the photos. Pieces in this piece have riveted crossed sword handles added to the back in the 19th century.
