state of preservation: after conservation
The painting presented at auction is a sketch for one of the most famous paintings by Jan Rosen, painted in Munich in 1886-1888. It was exhibited in the local Glaspalast (Crystal Palace) and at a special exhibition at the TZSP in Warsaw in 1889. In later years it was shown at a world exhibition in Paris, as well as in Poznan, Lvov and Krakow. The purchase of the work by Tsar Alexander III for the palace in Skierniewice, resulted in the development of the artist's career as a court painter of the St. Petersburg court. During World War I, the painting was deported to Russia and then returned under the Riga Treaty in 1923. In the interwar period it was exhibited in the Hall of the Supreme War Council of the Ministry of War Affairs. The building was bombed by the Germans in September 1939. At that time the painting was burned or lost.
