The painting shows a dynamic battle scene featuring both horsemen and infantry engaged in intense combat. The tension and movement of the scene are effectively captured through the dynamic poses of the figures. The main point of the action is situated on the left side of the composition. In the foreground, two soldiers, one wielding a stiletto and the other a spear, charge towards a horseman on the left. Unaware of the horseman in the centre ready to strike with his sword, the soldier with the spear remains vulnerable. Meanwhile, the attacked rider retaliates with a blow of his own. The outcome of the battle is left open to interpretation. To the right, a fallen soldier and a discarded helmet lie on the ground, while further horsemen continue to engage in combat. In the background, a cloud of smoke rises illuminated by firelight. A fortress rises on a hill in the distance on the right. The combination of pale colours on a dark background heightens the sense of menace and intensity within the ferocious battle scene.
