Attribution to Scarsellino is proposed for this interesting, previously unpublished painting, in which the remarkable and imaginative landscape stands out, with its incredible carpet of roses and lilies, Marian symbols par excellence, in the foreground, and the beautiful city view in the background. The refinement and delicacy of the group of three figures, executed in the cursive style typical of Scarsellino in the last two decades of the 16th century, lying on the ground and arranged according to a triangle whose apex is represented by the Child in the foreground, placed on the Virgin's mantle, is also worthy of note. Useful comparisons can be suggested with works by Scarsellino such as the so-called Madonna of the Ghiara in the Musée Royaux in Brussels (Novelli, cat. 12), the Landscape with Abraham and Isaac in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (Id., cat. 14) and the Holy Family and St. John in Adoration of the Child in a private collection in Milan (Id., cat. 254).
