Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian painter and printmaker whose style is most closely associated with Art Nouveau. He is considered one of the most important figurative painters of the early 20th century. Egon Schiele’s work represents an original, exceptionally individual interpretation of the principles of Art Nouveau ornamentation, as well as its inspiration drawn from the lines of nature. The artist’s body of work includes portraits, self-portraits, and landscapes, as well as highly expressive nudes, which many of Schiele’s contemporaries considered pornographic. As a painter, Egon Schiele became famous for the intense emotions and raw sexuality depicted in his works. The contorted shapes of the bodies and the expressive lines appearing in his paintings and drawings allow him to be classified as an early representative of Expressionism.
